suitable、appropriate、fitの違い

今日は「～に合った」という意味で使われるsuitable、appropriate、fitについて、それらの使い分け方を調べてみました。

right or appropriate for a particular purpose or occation

例1: This programme is not suitable for children.

例2: I don't have anything suitable to wear for the party.

suitableは目的を果たせるかどうかの観点で使われているようです。

例１ではプログラム自体が子供の教育という目的を果たせていないこと、例２ではパーティーに出席するという目的を果たせるような服を持っていないことを意味しています。

suitable, acceptable or correct for the particular circumstances

例1: Now that the problem has been identified, appropriate action can be taken.

例2: Jeans are not appropriate for a formal party

例3: The book was written in a style appropriate to the age of the children

appropriateは特定の状況に対して正しいかどうかの観点で使われるようです。

例1では問題が分かっている状況で正しい対応をしていくこと、例2ではパーティという状況の中ではジーンズが合っていないということ、例3では子供の年齢を考えた場合にその本のスタイルは合っていないということを意味しています。

suitable; of the right quality; with the right qualities or skilles

例1: The food was not fit for human consumption.

例2: Your car isn't fit to be on the road!

fitは質や能力が満たしているかどうかの観点で使われるようです。例1ではその食べ物の質が消化には合わないということ、例2では車の能力がその道を走るのに適していないということを意味しています。

suitable: 目的に対して正しいかどうか

appropriate: 状況に対して正しいかどうか

fit:質や能力を満たしているかどうか
